Destination Port Stephens provides two Awards/Scholarships annually to encourage and reward excellence in our local industry.

These awards are in memory of previous members and Directors  who gave significantly and unselfishly to their fellow members and the wider tourism industry in Port Stephens.

1. Robyn Shaw Personal Contribution to Tourism Award

Robyn Shaw was a well known and popular identity in the Port Stephens Tourism industry from the late eighties, the nineties and early noughties. Besides running a successful business in Anna Bay, Aussie Ewe and Lamb, Robyn served on the Board of the Tourism Organisation of Port Stephens (TOPS) and later PSTL for many years. She is well remembered for her straightforward, tenacious and passionate involvement in the industry as well as the incredible personal effort that she put in for many years.

In memory of Robyn, this award recognises an individual who contributes to the local tourism industry, over and above what their role requires or what is normally expected.

Award: Trophy and industry recognition.

Eligibility: The nominee must be either a member of Destination Port Stephens, an employee of a member or someone working closely with Port Stephens Tourism for the betterment of the local tourism industry. The person should have demonstrated a high level of personal contribution to the local industry, over and above their normal role.

Application: Applications are by nomination which must be submitted to Port Stephens Tourism by no later than 31st October.  There is no form however any application should include;

  • The name and contact of the Nominator
  • The name and contact of the Nominee
  • A brief background / outline of how the nominee has demonstrated a high level of personal contribution over the year in question.

Evaluation Process: All nominations will be reviewed by the Board of Destination Port Stephens at their November meeting:

Presentation: The winner will be recognised and awarded a trophy at the Destination Port Stephens Christmas party.

2. Tony Burrell Enthusiasm Scholarship

Tony Burrell joined the tourism industry in the mid-nineties when he introduced quad bikes to Port Stephens. Starting with a vehicle, a trailer and 4 machines, Tony built Sand Safaris into an innovative, successful and internationally known product. His profound enthusiasm with the sand dunes, Port Stephens, his business, his staff, his customers and indeed all people was infectious. Tony shared his time and immense energy with anyone who was fortunate to meet him.

Award: A cheque for $1000, a trophy and industry recognition

Eligibility: A member or member employee who demonstrates enthusiasm, passion and drive in their work. The recipient must work in the local tourism industry.

Application: Applications are by nomination which must be submitted to Destination Port Stephens by no later than 31st October.  There is no form however any application should include;

  • The name and contact of the Nominator
  • The name and contact of the Nominee
  • A brief background / outline of how the nominee has demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm, passion and drive over the year in question.

Presentation: The winner will be recognised and awarded a cheque to the value of $1000 at the Destination Port Stephens Christmas party.
