This year seems to be whizzing by exceptionally fast. It has already been several months since the discussion paper for the Progress of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy came off public exhibition. We would like to give everyone who took the time to participate in the consultation an update.
There is a significant amount of work going on at Council to collate all the submissions we received during this exhibition period and incorporate these into a fully-realised, properly implemented strategy.
We received approximately 75 individual submissions and hundreds of you interacted with the information we made available via haveyoursay.portstephens.nsw.gov.au, with ideas around parking, beautification, building heights and traffic management. I thank you all for taking the time to get involved.
There was one very resounding theme to every one of the submissions we received from you – that there is overwhelming support to keep the unique coastal character of the Bay and marrying the preservation of the natural environment with the enhancement of the built environment.
Our Strategic Planning unit has been carefully considering this feedback and all options, and is focused on doing things properly – fleshing out a funding strategy, undertaking parking and transport studies, and assessing delivery time-frames and works schedules. This work all takes time and the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy is by no means one that we intend to rush through.
The final draft of the strategy will be presented to Council at a meeting later this year, and is likely to be one of the first reports considered by the new Port Stephens Council after the upcoming local Government elections in September. If this draft is adopted by Councillors, we will again ask you to have your say.
We look forward to working together with you all to stimulate life back into Nelson Bay and make it a truly spectacular place to live, work, play and grow.
Thank you for being part of Have Your Say Port Stephens. We look forward to seeing your input on future projects.
