Shutterfest: Port Stephens Photography Competition
Free to enter – For young and, for the first time, old!
Port Stephens is a place of natural beauty, and the region’s annual Shutterfest competition invites photographers of all ages to try their hand at capturing the natural environment through their lenses.
The inaugural Shutterfest was held in 2015 as part of Naturefest, an annual program of events designed to draw nature-lovers to the region to enjoy its wealth of nature and wildlife. The contest attracted almost 200 images from young photographers across Australia, and for 2016’s event, organisers have decided to create a new open category for adult photographers.
With such a wealth of nature in Port Stephens, photographers can capture sights such as Australia’s biggest sand dunes at Stockton, pristine beaches, picturesque sunsets and perhaps even breaching whales as they migrate past the Port Stephens coastline.
The competition will run from June 1 to July 13, 2016. Photographs need to reflect the natural environment of Port Stephens and can be black and white or colour, raw or enhanced. It is free to enter, and open to three age divisions; 8-13 years, 14-18 years, and 19+ years. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in each age division, and prizes include Camera House gift cards, a half-day Port Stephens adventure voucher and Coles Myer gift cards.
In addition to the prizes determined by the judging panel, a people’s choice award will be given to the photograph which attracts the most ‘likes’ on the Port Stephens Facebook page. The winner will receive a $200 Port Stephens accommodation / experience voucher, and their winning image will be developed into a canvas to be displayed at the Port Stephens Visitor Information Centre.
Two special photography tours held during the competition period will provide perfect opportunities to get some great shots of Port Stephens. Held on Saturday, July 9, 2016, Moonshadow TQC’s Sunrise Photography Cruise will take guests to intimate locations only accessible by boat, enabling them to capture whales, dolphins, turtles, penguins, albatross, eagles and pelicans on camera. The cruise costs $69 per person. A Sunrise Tin City and Sand Dune Photography Tour will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2016, taking snappers across the vast, Sahara-like sand dunes of the Worimi Conservation lands. This tour costs from $35 per person.
