MESSAGE FROM DESTINATION PORT STEPHENS
Dear DPS Members,
It’s been a dramatic week here in Port Stephens with COVID-19 more directly impacting our local community.
From my experience I have seen that DPS members have been acting responsibly and professionally throughout the pandemic, which helped us to recover quickly once restrictions were lifted. We are now in a slightly different circumstance with local cases as we have to consider protecting our reputation as a safe place to visit.
DPS member businesses are responding in various ways to the latest challenges. From tour operators closing part of the week, to restaurants now reverting back to take away only. I fully support these proactive steps to ensure social distancing and to limit any spread within our community. I personally am choosing to close Little Nel cafe on Sundays (our busiest day) for the next 2 weeks as it can be difficult to maintain correct distancing with large numbers of people waiting on tables and for take away.
In regards to our current DPS marketing campaign, due to the current circumstances it was decided at the Destination Port Stephens board meeting yesterday that we temporarily pause the ‘Incredible By Nature’ digital campaign. This digital campaign primarily targets the Sydney market which as you are all aware, has areas deemed clusters of the COVID-19 virus.
We believe for the destination and our members, particularly at this time with the announcement of cases in Port Stephens, that the investment from Destination Port Stephens will be better spent at a stage when travel is encouraged and we can welcome visitors back with open arms and people are confident to resume holidaying.
A series of local character videos were created as part of the campaign so we will continue to feed these out via our social channels to keep us front of mind.
We also encourage businesses to complete a COVID-19 Safety Plan and register as a COVID Safe business to ensure your guests know you are committed in keeping them and the community safe.
Please let us know of any changes you plan for your businesses, and we will update all members early next week.
Chairman, Destination Port Stephens.
